A delegation from the League of Parliamentarians for Al-Quds participated in the work and meetings of the 44th session of the African Parliamentary Union in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe.
The delegation of the League was headed by the Director General, Dr. Mohammad Makram Balawi, whose participation comes in response to an official invitation from the Union, in the session that discusses issues of terrorism and violent extremism.
On the sidelines of the meetings, the delegation met with the participating African delegations and discussed with them ways to support the Palestinian cause in international forums and enhance communication with African parliaments, in addition to supporting the League's file for obtaining observer membership in the Inter-Parliamentary Union.
The African Parliamentary Union announced in October last year that the League of Parliamentarians for Al-Quds had been granted observer membership in the Union during the seventy-sixth session of the Executive Committee of the Union held in Djibouti.
The league has an observer membership in the Union of Councils of Member States of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, the Global Organization of Parliamentarians Against Corruption, the Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union, in addition to the African Parliamentary Union.
The 44th session of the union discussed the contribution of parliaments to combating terrorism and violent extremism, and the economic and social repercussions of terrorism on the population.
The representative of the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism also gave a presentation on mechanisms for coordinating parliamentary action in the field of counter-terrorism to make the work more effective.
