The League of Parliamentarians for al-Quds and Palestine Condemns Israeli Knesset Vote on Death Penalty Law for Palestinian Prisoners
The League of Parliamentarians for al-Quds and Palestine expresses its strong condemnation of the Israeli Knesset's approval, in the first reading, of a bill that allows for the imposition of the death penalty on Palestinian prisoners, a dangerous escalation in the occupation's record full of violations against prisoners.
This law constitutes a blatant violation of international humanitarian law, especially the Fourth Geneva Conventions which prohibit the occupying power from issuing arbitrary judgments or implementing punishments against protected persons.
The League reaffirms that the law, along with the brutal torture methods, degrading treatment, and inhumane detention conditions faced by prisoners inside Israeli prisons and detention camps, amount to genocide, specifically the following acts of genocide: (1) causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group and (2) deliberately imposing living conditions on the group with the intent of wholly or partially destroying them physically
The League reiterates its emphasis on the fact that this vote is part of a series of racist legislations and policies aimed at legitimizing extrajudicial killings, arbitrary arrests, and systematic torture carried out by the occupation authorities against thousands of prisoners, including women, children, and the sick, in a blatant violation of human rights and universal humanitarian values.
The League calls on the parliaments of countries that have ratified the UN Convention against Torture and the UN Convention on the Prevention of Genocide, as well as all relevant human rights and humanitarian institutions, to take immediate action to put an end to the policy of systematic torture and enforced disappearance against Palestinian prisoners and detainees
The League urges concrete measures to pressure Israel to release all arbitrarily detained Palestinians, disclose the fate and whereabouts of all those forcibly disappeared, and enable the International Committee of the Red Cross to have unrestricted access to all places of detention
