May 16, 2026League of Parliamentarians for al-Quds and Palestine Holds Meeting with Argentine MPs to Coordinate Parliamentary Efforts in Support of Palestine
Saturday, May 16, 2026
As part of ongoing efforts to strengthen international solidarity and parliamentary diplomacy in support of the Palestinian cause, an expanded meeting was held yesterday, Friday, May 15, 2026, via the Zoom virtual platform. The meeting brought together Dr. Mohammad Makram Balawi, Secretary-General of the League of Parliamentarians for al-Quds and Palestine, with a distinguished group of Argentine members of parliament. The session was also attended by Mr. Ahmed Hweidi, General Director of the Palestinian Latino Forum, and Mr. Abdelkader Abu Kharej, the Forum's director in Argentina.
The meeting featured extensive discussions centered on coordinating parliamentary, legal, and media initiatives at both regional and international levels. Participants also reviewed national experiences in countering Zionist influence, particularly within the Argentine arena and the broader Latin American region.
At the outset of the meeting, the League's Secretary-General, Dr. Mohammad Makram Balawi, presented a comprehensive overview of the organization, which was established in 2015 under the presidency of Sheikh Hameed bin Abdullah Al-Ahmar. He explained that the League serves as a global, transcontinental parliamentary network that transcends ideological and religious divides, and features active female representation within its executive body.
Dr. Balawi emphasized that the League operates on the principle of human equality and the right of all peoples to live in dignity, anchoring its mission in international law rather than the prevailing "logic of power." Regarding operational mechanisms, he noted that the League undertakes political and media roles to highlight violations in Palestine, and organizes periodic meetings to build a unified and influential parliamentary front.
Furthermore, Dr. Balawi outlined a package of proposed measures championed by the League, which can be adapted to fit the specific legal framework of each individual country.
The meeting witnessed extensive deliberations from the Argentine side, during which MPs from the Left Front reviewed their field and political contributions. MP Juan Carlos Giordano spoke about the Argentine Left's active participation in the "Global Sumud" freedom flotilla. He also revealed that criminal complaints had been filed against the potential visit of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to Argentina, alongside ongoing efforts to oppose water sector privatization and confront companies complicit with the occupation. Giordano clarified that the Front's current priorities are focused on popular mobilization, demanding the severance of diplomatic relations, and exposing government complicity.
For her part, MP Vanina Biasi called for the launch of an international parliamentary campaign to counter attempts to impose "elastic definitions of antisemitism," which she argued are being weaponized as a tool to muzzle free speech and censor criticism of Israeli policies. She also stressed the importance of backing European labor and trade union movements, as well as activating direct actions such as political resignations and port strikes to halt weapon supplies.
In a related context, parliamentarian Mónica Schlotthauer highlighted efforts to send a parliamentary delegation to the Gaza Strip to break the blockade. She noted that she had submitted a draft resolution to the provincial Chamber of Deputies to condemn the persecution faced by defenders of Palestinian rights, characterizing the struggle for Palestine as a fundamentally political and moral issue against a system of war and genocide.
In a notable intervention, Peronist MP Lorena Pokoik uncovered critical details regarding the so-called "Isaac Agreements." She explained that she had personally undertaken the translation of these texts from Hebrew after they were bypassed through a government decree without being presented to Congress.
Pokoik confirmed that these agreements pose serious risks to Argentina's national sovereignty, including the transfer of sensitive geo-strategic data, as well as orchestrated plans to infiltrate and recruit elites within the judicial, political, and media sectors.
The final segment of the meeting focused on future operational mechanisms. Dr. Mohammad Makram Balawi proposed the establishment of a permanent coordination framework within Latin American countries to develop practical ideas that could later be replicated in the Middle East.
This initiative was widely welcomed. Julia Perie announced her readiness to organize and invite lawmakers from various Latin American countries to urgent meetings to build a regional parliamentary solidarity network. Meanwhile, MP Vanina Biasi affirmed her endorsement of the proposal, committing to study ways to put it into immediate effect.
