January 12, 2026Secretary-General of the League: The League Expanded Its International Presence and Activated Its Parliamentary Tools in Support of Palestine During 2025
The Secretary-General of the League of Parliamentarians for al-Quds and Palestine, Dr. Mohammad Makram Balawi, stated that the past year, 2025, constituted an exceptional milestone in the League’s journey, in light of the continued aggression against the Palestinian people and the genocide war in the Gaza Strip reaching unprecedented levels of brutality, destruction, and starvation. This reality compelled the League to elevate its work from the realm of rhetorical solidarity to the sphere of institutional parliamentary action, impactful international presence, and effective political and legal initiative.
Balawi explained, in a press statement on the occasion of issuing the League’s annual administrative achievement report, that this year witnessed a qualitative leap in the League’s performance, both in terms of expanding its regional and international presence and in activating its parliamentary, media, and legal tools in support of Palestine, in defense of Jerusalem, and in confronting the genocide war and the siege imposed on the Gaza Strip.
The Secretary-General noted that the League participated in a number of international parliamentary and human rights conferences related to the Palestinian cause and contributed to shaping political and parliamentary positions supportive of Palestinian rights. It also received international parliamentary and official delegations as part of strengthening its network of international relations and building a global parliamentary front in support of Palestine.
He added that the League recorded an active presence at the African Parliamentary Union Conference, as well as at the meetings of the Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union and the Union of Councils of the Member States of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, where it carried, in all these forums, the voice of Gaza, the cry of Jerusalem, and the demand to stop the aggression and lift the siege.
Balawi stated that at the height of the humanitarian catastrophe, the League took the initiative to launch an urgent international appeal to stop the war and lift the siege on Gaza, and actively participated in the accompanying political, parliamentary, and media mobilization. A number of its members also participated in the Freedom Flotilla to break the siege on Gaza, affirming that the League does not suffice with positions alone, but rather engages in arenas of action, sacrifice, and fieldwork.
The Secretary-General affirmed that the League’s efforts reflect its belief that the Palestinian cause is not a seasonal issue, but a central cause that requires long-term cumulative work, institutionalization of effort, and integration between political, parliamentary, popular, and legal action.
Balawi concluded by emphasizing that what has been achieved, despite its importance, is only one step along a long path, and that the League will continue its work with all its strength until the aggression stops, the siege is lifted, the occupation ends, and the Palestinian people attain their full and undiminished rights.
