Press Release

Issued by the League of Parliamentarians for Al-Quds and Palestine Regarding the Efforts of the "Peace Council" to Terminate the Mandate of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA)

The League of Parliamentarians for Al-Quds and Palestine is following with grave concern and strong condemnation the statements and directions issued by the "Peace Council," which reveal premeditated intentions and dangerous efforts to terminate the work of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) and liquidate its humanitarian, political, and legal role.

We, in the League, reaffirm our steadfast and unwavering position that any international or UN resolution concerning the rights and future of the Palestinian people holds no legitimacy or legal value unless it is carried out through direct consultation with the Palestinians themselves. They are the holders of the inherent right and possess the first and final word on everything related to their cause and destiny; no guardianship may be imposed upon them, nor can liquidation projects be passed against their will.

These dangerous efforts and decisions not only represent a flagrant violation of refugees' rights but also completely undermine regional stability and obliterate all relevant international legitimacy resolutions, foremost of which is Resolution 194 concerning the Right of Return.

The League strongly emphasizes that UNRWA has never been just a relief organization; rather, it is a living international witness established under international laws and resolutions created to render justice—even if partially—to Palestinians in the face of the historical injustice they suffered. The "Peace Council," which was established by and emerged from the UN Security Council and the United Nations, is morally and legally obligated to respect the resolutions and charters of international legitimacy. It is entirely unacceptable for it to work against them or undermine their foundations.

This Council ought to be a true expression of an independent "international will" aligned with justice. Its adoption of inciting Israeli narratives renders it a biased political tool aiming to re-engineer the Palestinian reality according to the occupation's conditions, acting as an instrument to execute its liquidation agendas.

Consequently, ending and dismantling UNRWA effectively means the complete and final destruction of whatever credibility or legitimacy remains for this international system. It would be an explicit declaration of the collapse of the values of justice and international law in the face of the arrogance of power, and it constitutes an illegal overstepping of the UN General Assembly's mandate.

The League calls upon world parliaments, as well as regional and international parliamentary unions, to take urgent and immediate action to reject these directions. We urge them to provide a political and financial protection network that ensures the sustainability of the Agency’s work and fulfills its historical and moral responsibilities, recognizing that compromising UNRWA compromises international peace and security, and pushes the region toward further explosion.
