Michele: organizations supporting the occupation are waging a major smear campaign against parliamentarians supporting the Palestinian cause in Italy

The president of the European League of Parliamentarians for Palestine and a member of the executive body of the League of Parliamentarians for Palestine, former MP in the Italian parliament, Michele Piras, revealed that the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Palestine, Francesca Albanese, and Italian MP Stefania Ascari, were subjected to a smear campaign, misinformation and false accusations by supporters of the Israeli occupation because of their position on the occupation.

Michele explained, in a press statement, that the Israeli occupation Ambassador in Italy launched severe attacks on the UN rapporteur, accusing her of leading an international campaign to delegitimize Israel.

He added that there is a fierce campaign and a major attack against parliamentarians and trade union figures supporting the Palestinian cause in Italy, expressing the solidarity and support of the European League of Parliamentarians for Palestine for parliamentarians and figures who were attacked within about four days, MP Stefania was attacked for participating as an institutional guest at an international conference held in Malmo, Sweden, focused on the human rights of the Palestinian people, where she was accused of being a supporter of Hamas, which is perceived as a terrorist organization by those who defend Israel.

"Israeli ambassador to Italy Alon bar accused the UN Special Rapporteur for Human Rights in Palestine, Dr. Francesca Albanese, of leading a global campaign aimed at delegitimizing Israel, during the press conference to present the Italian charter to the Association "Transatlantic Friends of Israel,"  which was attended by a number of members of Parliament in the press room of the Italian Senate," he said.

At the conclusion of its 49th session held in Geneva in March 2022, the human rights council appointed Francesca Albanese as special rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territory occupied in 1967, succeeding the Special Rapporteur, Professor Michael Link, and assumed her duties on 1 May 2022.

The Special Rapporteur is an independent expert appointed by the UN Human Rights Council to monitor and report on the human rights situation in the Occupied Palestinian Territories.

In a statement issued on March 30, Albanese said that the international community should take firm and principled measures to protect the human rights and dignity of Palestinians in "these times when the Occupied Palestinian territories are witnessing an increase in violence, with the new Israeli government threatening further annexation of the territories".

Since the appointment of Francesca Albanese, she has been receiving waves of Israeli attacks on her, due to her constant statements in support of the Palestinian cause, and her documentation of the ongoing Israeli violations against the Palestinian people.
