MK Ghattas starts serving his two-year term in Gilboa jail

Former Knesset member Basel Ghattas will enter Gilboa prison in northern Israel for a two-year prison sentence on Sunday on a charge of his role in helping Palestinian prisoners to contact their families.
The village of Rama in the occupied Palestinian inside had embraced on Saturday evening the festival of popular support with Ghattas, with the participation of a wide audience including all political spectrum in the inside, along with the Higher Follow-up Committee and the Committee on freedoms.
Ghattas had addressed the people’s festival in which he asserted his full responsibility for the “conscience, human and moral act towards the prisoners.”
He stressed that this is an opportunity to raise the issues of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli prisons, inhumane practices and contrary to the international conventions.
The Arab MK accepted the sentence as part of the plea deal in March after he was convicted of smuggling cellphones and SIM cards to prisoners for “humanitarian and moral reasons.”
