Ibrahim Bougali, President of the Arab Parliamentary Union and President of the Algerian National People's Assembly, condemned the Israeli occupation's decision to end the work of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), describing it as a serious escalation aimed at liquidating the historical rights of the Palestinian people, especially the right of refugees to return, in blatant violation of international law and international legitimacy.
Bougali called, in an official message, for a unified parliamentary stance that clearly condemns these crimes and pushes for the imposition of sanctions on the occupation to compel it to stop its settlement and discriminatory policies. He urged support for the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people in accordance with international legitimacy decisions, particularly UN Security Council Resolution 242 of 1967.
He noted that this decision comes amidst the ongoing Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip, the escalation of attacks on Al-Aqsa Mosque, and the tightening of restrictions in the West Bank, reflecting a systematic policy to erase Palestinian identity and change the demographic reality of the holy city.
He pointed out that this decision contradicts the occupation's commitments under the Geneva Conventions and international resolutions, especially UN General Assembly Resolution 302 of 1949, which established UNRWA's work and defined its role in providing assistance to Palestinian refugees until a just solution to their issue is reached.
The President of the Arab Parliamentary Union also denounced the occupation's exploitation of ceasefire agreements to expand settlements and strengthen its control over the land instead of working towards achieving a genuine truce. He emphasized that the attempt to end UNRWA's work amidst the harsh humanitarian conditions faced by Palestinian refugees reveals the occupation's true intentions to liquidate the Palestinian cause and impose a fait accompli.
He warned that the continuation of these practices threatens to reignite tensions in the region, stressing that the occupation does not seek a just peace but exploits international agreements to entrench its occupation and expand its influence.
He called on parliamentarians in all countries to bear their historical responsibilities and take a firm stance against these crimes, affirming that history will judge those who stand for justice and those who choose silence in the face of these violations against humanity.
