Michele Piras, a member of the Executive Committee and President of Europe for the League of Parliamentarians for al-Quds and Palestine, has strongly condemned Israel's recent attack on the UNIFIL peacekeeping mission, which is seen as an obstruction to its military operations. This incident comes as relentless bombings continue to rain down on central Beirut, resulting in yet another tragic toll: 22 dead and 117 injured.
Piras revealed that Israel ordered peacekeepers to vacate their positions, and when the UN refused, what many are now calling a deliberate attack ensued, constituting a war crime. "The sad irony is that they are firing at us with our own weapons: the weapons of the West, the weapons of democracies. The same weapons used to slaughter Palestinians and Lebanese," he stated.
He emphasized that it has now become evident to all that Israel has crossed the line of legitimate self-defense. "It took tens of thousands of victims, the bloodshed of Palestinians in Gaza and Lebanese civilians, the complete devastation of villages, and indiscriminate bombings of refugee camps and cities, as well as an attack on an esteemed international mission, to finally provoke a reaction."
Piras pointed out the staggering human cost of the conflict: over one hundred thousand wounded, thousands left maimed, and twenty thousand children murdered. "It has taken peacekeepers being targeted for the world to wake up and realize that the Israeli government is utterly out of control."
While he acknowledged the delayed response, he insisted that immediate action is necessary. "We need serious measures: severe sanctions, an end to military cooperation and supplies, an immediate halt to the massacre, a withdrawal within UN-recognized borders, and true international protection for civilians."
Piras's call to action underscores the urgent need for the international community to intervene and address the escalating violence and humanitarian crisis in the region.
