The Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor has called on the United Nations Special Rapporteur on violence against women, Reem Alsalem, to take effective and immediate measures to compel the Israeli occupation to stop the slow and deliberate killing of Palestinian Legislative Council member Khalida Jarrar.
The Monitor demanded the release of MP Jarrar, who has been held in solitary confinement in Israeli prisons for 20 days, and called for an end to the use of arbitrary detention, including administrative detention, against Palestinians.
In an urgent letter sent to both the Special Rapporteur on violence against women and the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, the Monitor included a complaint received from Jarrar’s husband, Mr. Ghassan Jarrar, regarding her arbitrary detention and inhumane solitary confinement in one of the Israeli prisons designated for criminal detainees.
In the complaint submitted to the Euro-Mediterranean team, Jarrar explained that the Israeli prison authorities have kept his wife in solitary confinement for 20 days in harsh conditions at "Neve Tirza" prison.
He pointed out that the human rights activist, who has been administratively detained for over eight months, was moved to solitary confinement without justification. There was no reason for her transfer from the prison where she was previously held, and the Israeli authorities did not inform her of her destination at the time of transfer. She later found out that she had been placed in solitary confinement in "Neve Tirza" prison, which is designated for female criminal detainees.
He stressed that the most pressing problem his wife faces is the actual lack of oxygen in the cell, the prohibition of outdoor time ("foura"), the cutting off of water from the toilet, the extreme heat, and the deliberate delay in providing food, emphasizing that these are "conditions of killing, not isolation."
