Italian Opposition Calls for Recognition of Palestinian State

The Italian opposition parties, including the Five Star Movement, the Democratic Party, and the Green and Left Alliance, are intensifying their calls for the Italian government to officially recognize the state of Palestine. This push for recognition comes in the wake of similar moves made by Norway, Spain, and Ireland.

The debate surrounding the recognition of Palestine has gained significant traction in Italy, particularly after the recent decisions by Spain, Ireland, and Norway to formally recognize the Palestinian state.

During a speech delivered by the deputy leader of the Five Star Movement, Riccardo Ricciardi, on Tuesday, members of parliament were observed waving the Palestinian flag. This action echoes a similar incident in France, where a radical left LFI MP was suspended for 15 days for a comparable display.

In his address, Ricciardi reminded the assembly that his party had tabled a motion the previous day, urging the Italian government to recognize the state of Palestine within the 1967 borders. "We have submitted a motion for the recognition of the State of Palestine, and we demand that the government and the Prime Minister take responsibility for this," he stated.

Following the Five Star Movement's call, both the Democratic Party (S&D) and the Green-Left Alliance have also voiced their support for Italy to recognize Palestine. Democratic Party Secretary Elly Schlein said, "We have seen Spain and Norway proceed with recognition; it is time for Italy to do the same." She added, "The problem is that the international community has never fully recognized a Palestinian state. Palestinians also have the right to live in peace and security in their own state."

Echoing this sentiment, MP Angelo Bonelli from the Green-Left Alliance stated, "We must recognize the State of Palestine and impose sanctions on Israel for committing crimes against humanity."

The growing pressure from the Italian opposition parties underscores the increasing momentum for the recognition of Palestinian state, with Italy now being called upon to join the ranks of other European countries that have taken this significant step.
