Chairing of the Executive Council of the Asian Parliament, Fadli Zon, Declares the Establishment of Palestine Commission in the Asian Parliamentary Organization

Chairperson of the House of Representatives Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation Committee (BKSAP) and Vice President of the League of Parliamentarians for al-Quds, Dr. Fadli Zon, was elected to co-chair the Executive Council Meeting of the Asian Parliamentary Assembly (APA) in Antalya, Turkiye, from November 26–29, 2023.

The forum was attended by sixteen Executive Council member countries, including Turkiye, China, Russia, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Lebanon, Iran, Iraq, Cambodia, Bahrain and Azerbaijan. The meeting discussed the need for APA, as a forum for Asian parliamentary organizations, to establish a Special Commission on Palestine that can focus on effective parliamentary diplomacy efforts to promote peace, stop the war, as well as investigate Israel's war crimes and push for Palestinian independence.

Fadli Zon led the formation of the Palestine Commission in the Asian Parliament by emphasizing the urgency of the current Palestinian situation. As the Chair of the session, he banged the gavel and declared the establishment of the Palestine Commission.

The deputy chairperson of the Gerindra Party said that parliaments, as the representatives of the people, must be able to show their commitment to fight against all forms of colonization, such as the one carried out by Israel against Palestine. For this reason, he invited the parliaments of the Asian countries that are members of the APA to unite in rejecting and resisting the Israeli occupation.

At this meeting, a number of parliaments expressed their views on the importance of APA parliamentary efforts to support Palestinian independence. The Deputy Speaker of the Palestinian Parliament, Ali Feisal, who was subsequently elected as the Chairperson of the Palestine Commission, was also present at this meeting.

The Indonesian Parliament's persistent efforts to promote parliamentary diplomacy in support of Palestinian independence were recognized by the Asian parliaments present. Indonesia was asked to be the Rapporteur in the Palestine Commission.

In this APA session, Fadli Zon also condemned the double standards and hypocrisy of countries that have often spoken in favor of human rights and democracy but remained silent when responding to Israeli atrocities against Palestine. Israel brutally targets civilians, including women and children. More than 15,000 people have been killed, and tens of thousands have been injured. Israel has also been proven to bomb hospitals, schools, journalists, refugees, and Indonesian hospitals. These are all barbaric acts beyond humanity, crimes against humanity, and war crimes. Countries that support Israeli atrocities have no legitimacy to talk about moral humanity, democracy, and human rights, Fadli Zon said at the beginning of the session.

He also reiterated Indonesia's full support for the realization of Palestinian independence. The current temporary ceasefire in Gaza will not be effective in stopping Israeli war crimes unless there is a permanent ceasefire and Palestine is free from occupation.

For this reason, he invited the Asian parliaments present to make joint efforts to promote the realization of Palestinian independence, including through the recently established Palestinian Commission.
