UN Resolution in Favor of Palestine

Adopted the United Nations Committee on Economic and Financial Questions; Second Committee, Thursday, draft resolution entitled "Permanent sovereignty of the Palestinian people in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including Jerusalem, and of the Arab population in the occupied Syrian Golan over their natural resources."

The resolution was voted in favour of 157 votes, while seven States (Canada, Israel, Nairo, Micronesia, Marshall Islands and Palau) opposed it, with 14 abstentions. According to Wafa.

This resolution is part of a package of resolutions adopted by the United Nations for the benefit of the Palestinian people on an annual basis, addressing and covering various aspects of their political, economic and social life.

The importance of the resolution stems from the fact that it reaffirmed the right of the Palestinian people to control and manage their natural resources, which is consistent with international law and the Fourth Geneva Convention. That control is a necessary condition for the sustainable development of Palestine, as well as its recognition of the right of Palestinians to claim compensation for the exploitation, destruction, depletion and endangerment of their natural resources by the Israeli occupation because of its illegal actions.

The resolution stressed that the construction of the separation wall and settlements in the occupied West Bank and Jerusalem by the occupation constituted a violation of international law and deprived the Palestinian people of their natural resources.
