The ceasefire brokered by Egypt between Palestinian factions in the besieged Gaza Strip and Israel brought to end two days of Israeli aggression but not before leaving 34 Palestinians dead, including entire families of children and women.

While Gaza is not new to Israeli aggression, with each wall destroyed by Israeli rockets comes a different story – a story of children losing their parents, a father losing his son, a sister losing a brother.

It all began on Tuesday at dawn when Israeli warplanes fired two rockets at a Palestinian house in the eastern Gaza City neighborhood of al-Shuja’yeh, killing Bahaa Abu al-Atta, 42, a senior leader of the Islamic Jihad movement, and his wife, Asmaa, and injuring their children Saleem, Mohammad, Liyan and Fatima.

In retaliation, Saraya al-Quds, the military wing of the Islamic Jihad, responded with rocket fire into Israel, and the latter responded with non-stop airstrikes that killed many more people.

By the end of Tuesday, the first day of the aggression, 10 fatalities were recorded.

On Wednesday morning, Israeli warplanes resumed their attacks, targeting Palestinians everywhere, killing a man and his two sons, two brothers and entire families. By early next morning, the number of fatalities has reached 24 and over 70 injuries.

Perhaps the most heartbreaking is the killing on Thursday at dawn of the entire Abu Malhous family in Deir al-Balah. An F16 warplane fired a missile at the house, reducing it to rubble and killing eight members of the Abu Malhous family, four were children and two women, while at least 13 others, mostly women and children, were injured nearby.

The Ministry of Education said six students were among the fatalities and 15 schools were damaged to various degrees. Damages to buildings in general was estimated at $500,000.

The Ministry of Health confirmed that one third of the 34 Palestinians killed and the majority of the 111 injured in the 100 airstrikes in a little over two days were children and women.
