Tunisian President stresses importance of two-state solution

The President of Tunisia, Beji Caid Essebsi, stressed in his opening speech at the 30th Arab League Summit held in Tunis, on Sunday, that “a just and comprehensive settlement can only be achieved through the two-state solution and with Jerusalem as the capital of the State of Palestine.”
Essebsi called to intensify efforts and Arab coordination in order to put an end to all decisions and measures aimed at harming the Palestinian cause, in addition to addressing all that would prejudice the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people.
He reaffirmed the centrality of the Palestinian cause in the joint Arab work and putting it back in the spotlight on the international arena.
He also stressed that “regional and international stability will only be achieved through a just and comprehensive settlement to the Palestinian issue,” adding “that guarantees the rights of the Palestinian people, and lead to the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital, based on the resolutions of international legitimacy, the Arab peace initiative and the principle of a two-state solution.”
On Sunday, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas also attended the summit, which mainly discussed Palestinian aid, the occupied Golan Heights, Yemen, and the readmission of Syria. Arab leaders were united in their condemnation of United States President Donald Trump’s policies seen as “unfairly biased toward Israel” and expressed their rejection of Israel’s occupation of the Golan heights, East Jerusalem, and West Bank.
The 22-member league, excluding Syria, jointly condemned Trump’s recognition of the Golan Heights, which Israel seized from Syria in the 1967 war, as Israeli territory.
In a final declaration during the summit, the league “affirmed that the Golan is occupied Syrian territory according to international law, the decisions of the United Nations and the Security Council.”
