Arab League condemns Israeli killing of Palestinian prisoner

The Arab League Tuesday condemned the murder of prisoner Aziz Oweisat, 53, from Jabal al-Mukaber in Occupied Jerusalem by the Israeli prison service.
In a statement issued by the Palestine and occupied Arab territories division, the Arab League held Israel responsible for Oweisat’s death and warned Israel of continuing its brutal measures against Palestinian prisoners.
It called on the international community to compel Israel to respect international law, humanitarian law, specifically the Fourth Geneva Convention, and to abide by the rules of treatment of Palestinian prisoners in a manner consistent with the UN Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners and other relevant international standards.
The Arab League reiterated calls for the establishment of a commission of inquiry into the crimes of the Israeli occupation, and to hold it responsible for its crimes and to follow up with the perpetrators before international justice.
Oweisat was detained on March 8, 2014 and sentenced to 30 years in jail. He suffered from a severe hemorrhage and a heart attack after he was severely assaulted by Israeli prison guards on April 2, 2018.
He fell into a coma, which required his transfer to a hospital and was later announced dead.
