A wave of incitement was launched on Saturday by Israeli officials against the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) after it adopted several resolutions critical of Israel’s behavior toward the Palestinians.

Israel’s War Minister Avigdor Lieberman wrote on Twitter, “Israel has no business being in the UN Human Rights Council,” adding, “Its presence there gives legitimacy to anti-Semitic resolutions, and the farce must end.”

Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu waged a similar criticism on Twitter saying, “More resolutions detached from reality from the circus of the absurd that is called the Human Rights Council. It is time for them to change the name to the Council for resolutions against the only democracy in the Middle East.”

The UNHRC on Saturday passed a number of resolutions against Israel because of its aggressions on the occupied Palestinian territories and asked it to pay huge financial compensations for Palestinian facilities and schools damaged during the 2014 war on Gaza.

The resolutions issued in Geneva include a call to adhere to resolution 2334 which stipulates that Israeli settlements are illegal. The resolution calls on world nations to condemn the expansion of settlements and distinguish in their relevant dealings between Israel and the territories occupied since 1967.

The United States, Australia, Hungary and Togo voted against the resolution, while Britain, Croatia, Georgia, Panama, Rwanda, Slovakia and Ukraine abstained.

Among the resolutions passed against Israel were ones that discussed human rights in the occupied Syrian Golan, the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination, and ensuring accountability and justice for all violations of international law in the occupied Palestinian territories, including East Jerusalem.

Another resolution called for the protection of human rights in the West Bank and Gaza Strip in accordance with international conventions and condemned Israel’s refusal to cooperate with a UN committee investigating into the 2014 offensive on Gaza.

For her part, the US ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley criticized the UNHRC resolutions saying that Israel will continue to evaluate its membership in the Council.
