The League of Parliamentarians for al-Quds and Palestine announced the appointment of Dr. Mohammad Makram Balawi as Secretary-General of the league, during the first meeting of its new Executive Committee.
Balawi was unanimously elected during the Executive Committee meeting held on Wednesday, May 22, 2024, via the Zoom application.
Dr. Mohammad Balawi is a Jordanian of Palestinian origin, holding a PhD in post-colonial studies from Malaysia. He is also the President of the Asia and Middle East Forum, the founder of the International Coalition to Save Jerusalem, and a member of the General Secretariat of the Kuala Lumpur Forum for Political Thought and Civilization.
Dr. Balawi had previously held the position of Director-General of the League during the last term (2021-2024), where he oversaw the organization of the League's conferences and the preparation of its strategic and expansionist plans.
He has also managed several institutions specialized in Palestinian affairs, political studies, and research. He has worked as an academic lecturer and advisor to various regional and international institutions, and has participated in numerous academic conferences.
Dr. Balawi is considered a writer and researcher specializing in Asian affairs, particularly the Southeast Asian region. He has published several books and research papers in this field, some of which have addressed the relationship between the United States and China, the relationship between the West and South Asia, and the Arab-Asian relationship.
The League of Parliamentarians for al-Quds and Palestine launched the activities of its Fifth International Parliamentary Conference on Friday, April 26, in the city of Istanbul, under the title "Freedom and Independence for Palestine," under the auspices of the Turkish Parliament.
During the Fifth Conference held in Istanbul, the League approved amendments to its statute, including the establishment of the position of Secretary-General, who was elected by the Executive Committee.
